1) Health Contract with AmericaLast week’s Lighthouse reported about a proposal to make tax fairness—the idea that health insurance purchased in the private market should receive the same tax credits as insurance obtained through an employer—a component of legislation aimed at replacing the Affordable Care Act. Independent Institute Research Fellow John C. Goodman includes four additional pillars in the new Health Contract with America. Let’s briefly explain two of them: portability and real insurance. READ MORE

2) Holding Attorneys General in Contempt

Fallout from “Fast and Furious”—the federal effort to track the flow of firearms from the United States to the Mexican drug cartels—has exposed hypocrisy in Congress. Accused of lying about his knowledge of the bungled program, Eric Holder is the first sitting U.S. attorney general to be held in criminal contempt by the House of Representatives, even though many of his predecessors—Alberto Gonzales, Janet Reno, Edwin Meese, John Mitchell, Robert F. Kennedy, and others—behaved badly while acting as the nation’s top law-enforcement official, according to Anthony Gregory, research editor at the Independent Institute, in his latest piece at the Huffington PostREAD MORE

3) Will Mexico Abandon the Drug War?

Although the jury is still out, the election of Enrique Peña Nieto to the Mexican presidency may signal a new beginning. More than 50,000 civilians have been killed in recent years by drug violence, and the mayhem helps explain why voters were willing to bring back rule by PRI—the Institutional Revolutionary Party—after a twelve-year hiatus. Some in Washington fear that Peña Nieto will undermine the U.S.-supported drug war by making a secret and unofficial truce with the drug cartels—just as PRI had done during its earlier reign, but such a move would be preferable to the deadly status quo of the drug war, according to Independent Institute Senior Fellow Ivan ElandREAD MORE

4) Bullying in Academia

Although the quality of K-12 schooling in the United States suffers poorly compared to education in other developed nations, many of the world’s best universities call the U.S. home. One reason is that the faculty in America are more autonomous than counterparts in Europe, who increasingly labor under the yoke of educational central planners and an authoritarian mindset. Philosopher Aviezer Tucker puts forth this provocative thesis in his article, “Bully U: Central Planning and Higher Education,” published in the summer issue of The Independent Review. Reports of pending legal action against Tucker by the university where he used to work help support his claim.READ MORE

HOUSE REPEALS OBAMACARE 244-185

House lawmakers voted Wednesday to repeal the federal health care overhaul — the latest in a long line of anti-ObamaCare votes, but the first since the Supreme Court upheld the law and defined one of its key provisions as a “tax.” The House has voted more than 30 times to scrap, defund or undercut the law since Obama signed it in March 2010. As with those bills…

Atheist Files Suit Over Restaurant’s Discount For Church Goers

I’ve been to many restaurants in my years that gave discounts to senior citizens and some to active military, but I was never able to qualify for them at the time because I was too young or no longer in the service. I didn’t file a lawsuit claiming the restaurant owner was discriminating against me. But that is exactly what a Pennsylvania man is doing…

DHS CONTINUES TARGETING CONSERVATIVES & LIBERTY LOVERS AS TERRORISTS

While the Obama administration engages in a month long UN conference to try and undermine the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and “pursuing a negotiated peace with the Taliban,” they are also looking at patriotic Americans as terrorists, especially those who believe that this administration is a real and present danger to the American way of life…

The “all time champ in wrongful convictions”?
Kirstin Lobato was 19 when she was sent to prison for murder — despite the fact that no physical evidence tied her to the crime scene, multiple witnesses testified that she was almost 200 miles away at the time, and other evidence pointed to a completely different person.

Crucial DNA evidence ignored: For ten years, law enforcement officials have refused to test DNA evidence from the crime scene, even though it could exonerate Kirstin and find the real killer. Kirstin’s friend Michelle Ravell says the reason is clear: they know it could prove they’ve kept an innocent woman in prison for ten years. But now, there is new hope.

You can help exonerate an innocent woman: A new District Attorney has just been appointed, and he has the power to agree to new DNA tests. Michelle says it’s a chance for him to right an historic wrong — and she knows that if he hears from thousands of people across the country, he’ll be convinced to take this opportunity to uncover the truth.

Click here to sign Michelle’s petition asking District Attorney Stephen Wolfson to allow DNA testing in Kirstin’s case.

OBAMA’S ‘MISSING YEAR’ AT COLUMBIA FOUND?

Two separate database reports from the National Student Clearinghouse have contradicted President Obama’s claim he attended Columbia University for two years. The reports have added to the intrigue generated by Obama’s unwillingness to discuss his time at the Ivy League institution, his refusal to release educational records, and the fact that many political science students and faculty there in the early 1980s say they don’t remember him…

MAJORITY OF VOTERS BELIEVE OBAMA HAS CHANGED COUNTRY FOR WORSE

Two-thirds of likely voters say President Obama has kept his 2008 campaign promise to change America — but it’s changed for the worse, according to a sizable majority. A new poll for The Hill found 56 percent of likely voters believe Obama’s first term has transformed the nation in a negative way, compared to 35 percent who believe the country has changed for the better under his leadership…
