More U.S. Soldiers Dying from Suicide Than Combat

Via: AP:

Suicides are surging among America’s troops, averaging nearly one a day this year — the fastest pace in the nation’s decade of war.

The 154 suicides for active-duty troops in the first 155 days of the year far outdistance the U.S. forces killed in action in Afghanistan — about 50 percent more — according to Pentagon statistics obtained by The Associated Press.

The numbers reflect a military burdened with wartime demands from Iraq and Afghanistan that have taken a greater toll than foreseen a decade ago. The military also is struggling with increased sexual assaults, alcohol abuse, domestic violence and other misbehavior.

  1. I’ve heard similar statistics before although not quite as high as 50%!?!?

I think it’s a combination of naive young men, with little prospects otherwise, joining the army, realising it’s nightmarish, being too immature to handle the politics of the Taleban and Afghani villagers – the needing to be nice to the kids in the area whilst in the meantime the kids just report back all the strategic information to the elders etc, who then use the information to prepare to kill them whilst they’re not looking. In the meantime, the soldiers’ superiors just tell them to suck it up. Then they’re being told they’re evil assholes for being in the army and killing poor ‘innocent’ Afghanis etc etc You see how all this B$ can start to really p*** someone off. All this hits home pretty quickly after being stationed…the realisation – reconciling all this within their own mindset and finally imploding. Of course, it’s this very ignorance, naivety, immaturity whatever you want to call which is what the Warmongers are relying on…Who’s really to blame for this…? If I was a parent of a deceased I think I’d know who to focus on…
