Jefferson on the Blood of Tyrants

‘Tis the day to consider the immortal words of Thomas Jefferson:

“God forbid we should ever be twenty years without such a rebellion.
The people cannot be all, and always, well informed. The part which is
wrong will be discontented, in proportion to the importance of the facts
they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions,
it is lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty. …
And what country can preserve its liberties, if it’s rulers are not
warned from time to time, that this people preserve the spirit of
resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as
to the facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost
in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from
time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
It is its natural manure.”

Let’s not let Uncle TJ down!

  1. Was Jefferson talking about having some fun and gathering up the friends and family for a nice, old fashioned anti-Jew pogrom?

  2. Jefferson was an intellectual elitist, and in all probability a rapist. Just as much a tyrant as those he presumed to fight. Let’s not glorify the American Revolution. Or the rich white men who founded this country for their kin.

It’s hard to pull away from those words, I know, I was raised in a Unitarian Universalist congretation–TJ was our pride and joy–but it’s a bunch of historically-glorified lies.

  3. Jefferson was far fron the left, he was the first real conservitive, believing that large gov was bad. This quote was meant as a warning to those that forgot who placed them in office, ie Nancy Pelosi, Chris Dobbs, Barny Frank, and the “Blood” that he mentions could well be their political careers, not their actual blood,

  4. Oh, Samdoc….. It’s hilarious you should say that Jefferson was a “conservative” and not a “leftist” because he didn’t believe in large government. Traditionally, (i.e. at the time Jefferson was alive) a “conservative” was a proponent of monarchy, a State-backed Church, the old feudal order and a “liberal” was someone who wanted to destroy all these things and replace them with republican government, separation of church and state and free trade. I guess it just illustrates how far “the Left” has fallen that anti-statism is now considered “right-wing.”

And hell, even if someone ate baby skin for breakfast, that doesn’t mean that what they say can’t be true or inspiring.
