We Can Console Jesus

Michael Adams

Through the very lives we live today, we are capable of consoling Jesus as he hangs upon the cross. To relieve his loneliness and ease his suffering and pain, we must go beyond being near Jesus. We must tend to him. To do this, we must recognize the reality of the gift of his mercy and feel the guilt for having denied him. Then, moved by love, we must ask him how we can give of ourselves and bring him joy.

Abortion, Slavery, and the Image of God

Dr. Richard Clements

Arguments in favor of abortion “rights” have undergone an evolution in the past thirty years that parallels an evolution that took place in the arguments in favor of slavery prior to the Civil War. Pro-life advocates have pointed out that our country is dehumanizing unborn children who, like all human beings, are made in the image and likeness of God, just as our country dehumanized slaves. Human beings should never have been enslaved in order to facilitate the flourishing of other human beings, nor should unborn children be killed in order to facilitate such “flourishing.”

Tradwives, Kate Middleton, and Tradition

Maggie Phillips

The draw of social media accounts where women show themselves and their families living simple, ordered lives that are rooted in tradition, clearly speaks to something that is hardwired in the human condition. The women are being scrutinized—by turns enviously, critically, and aspirationally. The recent case of the missing princess explains the downside of this phenomenon. Kate Middleton’s humanity was reduced in the minds of many to public roles performed for public consumption. When she stopped performing them, the public rushed to fill the vacuum.

Flawed Objections to Marian Apparitions

Prenatal Testing and Abortion in a Post-Roe World

Mark Bradford

The global prenatal testing market was valued at $15.5 billion in 2022 and is projected to increase by an annual growth rate of about 10.2 percent to $40.9 billion by 2032. The most common advice pregnant women receive from their healthcare professionals is encouragement to end their pregnancy. Women are caught in this quandary created by the medical profession, along with the abortion and prenatal testing industries. Down syndrome and other disability advocates now have to work harder than ever to evangelize a culture that is told it should reject an “imperfect” life. The stakes are high.

Calvary: A Very Lenten Movie

Collin Slowey

In seeking a film in these final days of Lent, there is a uniquely compelling exploration of Christ’s atonement to be found in the 2014 cinema masterpiece, Calvary. John Michael McDonagh’s main character’s ordeal is a kind of dramatized analogy of Girard’s scapegoat theory. The film is unrelentingly bleak in its portrayal of the human condition without God, while the messages raise it to the level of genuine spiritual edification. Movie-watching isn’t typically penitential, but these 101 minutes are Lenten indeed.
