America is making worse than a fool of itself in Iran, as weeks of casualties and destruction have piled up and Trump’s war (co-fought with Israel, of course) is losing him major support. We have some critiques: the whole shambolic undertaking is revealing the incompetence and the cruelty at the heart of this administration. Our military operations, despite having basically infinite resources that vastly outstrip most other nations’, are being guided by ignorant, hapless, and unskilled tyrant-children, and the fallout for Trump’s own credibility among his base and the country at large has gone out of his control. As we watch gas prices go up, we also watch Trump continue to lock in on his senseless war, and it’s becoming clearer and clearer every day that not only do our elected officials have anything but our best interests in mind, but they also just can’t govern to begin with.

It’s also in this moment that we can put this conflict into a larger context — the numerous recent and high-profile regime-change efforts Trump has pursued in other countries with resources that he’s willing to go to war for. Consider the kidnapping of Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro, in an oil-rich country to which the far-right American government is politically opposed. Meanwhile, in Cuba, the blockade keeps vital supplies from entering the country, and Trump is now squeezing the Cuban government and people to pursue his own economic and political agenda there. The broader international story in which the ongoing conflict with Iran is unfolding spans the entire globe, and we hope our conversation reveals it as anything but an isolated incident.
