I WISH more people would realise that age classifications are designed to set one generation at the throat of another and prevent us from collaborating on the issues that really matter. Whilst I’m not quite old enough to fall into the so-called ‘boomer’ category, I have always found it extremely frustrating whenever younger people demonise the generation said to include my parents.
Whilst I understand the criticisms that are levelled at most ‘boomers,’ much of it appears to be centred on jealousy and younger generations would do well to remember how large numbers of ‘boomers’ went out onto the streets to challenge the System. Millions opposed mass immigration, vivisection, nuclear power, financial injustice, government corruption, militarism and the police state. They did not have the luxury of confining their activism to a computer screen, so when it comes to radical activism the ‘boomers’ were light years ahead of the people who spend their time designing memes, trolling or trying to impress one another on social media.
I’m sure the Establishment is very happy that people from the mid-1960s onwards are getting upset because they didn’t have a mortgage by the time they were 30, or can’t afford four holidays a year, but many of those selfish ‘boomers’ that people love to hate so much were beaten, fined, jailed, tortured and murdered for their beliefs. These are the people that should be emulated by the youth of today.
