Gaza is now officially suffering a man-made famine as a result of Israel’s humanitarian aid blockade. That means at least 20% of people are suffering extreme food shortages, 1 in 3 children are acutely malnourished, and people are dying daily from starvation or malnutrition.1
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called the famine “a man-made disaster, a moral indictment, and a failure of humanity itself.”2
Why hasn’t Congress done something to stop this horrific humanitarian disaster? One big reason is that there’s longstanding fear amongst Democrats that opposing funding and weapons sales to Israel will lead to career-ending political consequences. Lawmakers still worry that there will be serious backlash if they oppose Israel’s atrocities. We need to change these perceptions on Capitol Hill.
It’s time to show lawmakers that support for genocide is NOT a stance that their political career can survive. Demand Progress is preparing to launch a poll targeting constituents of Democrats who are still voting to fuel Netanyahu’s atrocities with funding and weapons.
By showing elected Democrats that the vast majority of their voters oppose support for Israel’s horrors in Gaza, we can change policy in Congress. But we need your help to put our plan into action.

As Palestinians starve, Israel bombed one of the areas hardest hit with hunger: Gaza City.3 Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vehemently denies the international report of famine, calling it an “outright lie.”4 All as the IDF sends rockets to kill civilians, continues shooting Gazans waiting in line for food, and won’t let in the UN’s pallets of food for starving Palestinians.
“Food stacks up at borders because of systematic obstruction by Israel,” said the UN’s head of humanitarian affairs.5 The UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) said it has three months worth of food for every Gazan in warehouses just outside Gaza’s border.6
UN experts are describing “unimaginable horrors.”7 Public health conditions are “catastrophic.”8
Global outrage isn’t slowing Netanyahu. But an end to U.S. funding and weapons could stop what Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch are calling a genocide in Gaza. The U.S. government has sent tens of billions of dollars in funding and weapons to Israel since October 2023 — Israel couldn’t continue without U.S. support.
The constituent poll we’re preparing could shift the ground under Congress and show Democrats that the people they represent want these horrors to END. There’s no moral reasoning for continuing to back the regime slaughtering and starving Palestinians. And there’s no political reasoning either.
We’re ready to show key Democrats that it’s time for them to stop backing weapons for Israel and start backing peace, justice, and safety for Palestinians.
With gratitude,
The team at Demand Progress Action
