ALMOST 700 Americans have been killed in mass shootings over the last eleven months, as well as a constantly increasing total of 2,222 people wounded in 546 shootings. Around 12,000 people have been killed by guns in general, although statistics do not take into account the high number of suicides.
According to the well-worn cliché, guns do not kill people – people do. In the face of social dislocation, rampant urbanity, individualism and mass overcrowding, modern society has reached the point where people are now turning on one another like never before. I call it ‘rattism’. We all know why certain American politicians are actively campaigning for gun control and it has nothing whatsoever to do with public safely.
Personally, I do not like guns one bit and if I could flick a switch and make them all disappear in a puff of smoke then I would be very tempted to do so. However, in a society in which so many people have guns then it makes perfect sense to own one and banning them will simply leave the guns in the hands of the criminals. One of the most violent and unpredictable criminals of all, being the American Government itself.
