Can the Media Survive?

October 21, 2024
Shortly after Charlotte Klein arrived at New York this past summer, we set her on this project: to interview as many members of the media elite as she could and ask them what, exactly, they think is going on with the media. Over several months, she spoke to 57 prominent editors, executives, journalists, and entrepreneurs, both on and off the record, and grilled them on such pertinent questions as: Why did anybody trust that big tech (or billionaire owner-saviors) had journalists’ best interests in mind in the first place? How did journalism end up being so distrusted? Do you really read all those newsletters you get in your inbox? What happened to DEI? Where do you get your gossip? And what is the point of print?
—Carl Swanson, editor-at-large, New York
