The book Conservatism, Inc., would never write

By Tom Woods

Most people think that because we aren’t ruled by a guy in a military uniform who pounds his fist on the desk and yells, we live in a free country.

The managerial state gets its way in a manner that is rather more subtle than that.

I used to be one of those people who would wring his hands and say, “If only we could get back to the vision of the Founding Fathers,” or “if only we could restore the Constitution,” etc. But our present sickness goes way, way beyond any of that.

Auron McIntyre has written a book of tremendous significance, called The Total State: How Liberal Democracies Become Tyrannies.

If Conservatism, Inc., had ever been serious, this is the kind of book they would have published, as opposed to the surface-level analysis of a Sean Hannity or a Ben Shapiro.

Auron and I had an excellent discussion about it, which I think you’ll enjoy (click the image):

Episodes of the Tom Woods Show continue to be released on schedule even though I’m in Iceland this week, because that’s the kind of guy I am.

(I’ll definitely be writing up my thoughts about Iceland and the “Scandinavian model” of high taxes with extensive “public services,” a mix our tour guide on Tuesday spent 15 minutes praising and propagandizing about, for the Tom Woods Elite Letter.)

In fact, today Jenna and I took three of the Woods daughters horseback riding. As you can see in the picture, I have never looked better. (I realize there is something a bit Dukakis-in-the-tank about this picture.)

I have trouble getting pictures of the three adult daughters I brought with me, so I snapped this candid one. For Regina (right), apart from cruises, this is the first foreign country she’s visited (I wasn’t so much into travel when she was younger, so we’re going to make up for that).

And in fact, right around Regina’s birthday next month my next mastermind meeting is coming up. For the first time, we’ll be meeting at my house. This is for all you business folks who are doing fine but yearn to do better than fine. We have a small, elite group that’s extremely smart and helps each other.

In the private messaging app we use to stay in contact between meetings, one of our longtime members just told a new member, after a brief conversation: “Oh, my friend…I think we’ve just unlocked a million dollars in your business.”

Just the kind of thing I love to hear.
