“Steven Soderbergh Can’t Quit ‘Magic Mike,’”

— Katherine Brooks, deputy editor, Vulture

Magic Mike’s Last Dance is as much a part of the Channing Tatum Dance Movie subgenre as it is the Steven Soderbergh Process Film canon. Tucked in next to the Ocean’s stories, it’s fundamentally a tale about people doing something that emphasizes how difficult that something — a heist, a revue-style stripper production — is to pull off. In fact, Soderbergh admits he had “no compelling reason” to make a third movie about Mike Lane until Tatum and his dance partner, Alison Faulk, developed an actual live show in London. Upon seeing it, Soderbergh tells Vulture’s Matt Zoller Seitz, he “was just so knocked out that I wanted to glom onto what they had done.” And so a fictionalized account of the blood, sweat, and body oil that went into making it all happen was born.
