By Ryan Cooper, The Week Now the fate of American democracy depends on proving me wrong. On election night in 2012, Republican nominee Mitt Romney conceded defeat around 1 a.m. After calling then-President Barack Obama to offer his congratulations on re-election, Romney gave a speech to his supporters. […]
By Jeva Lange, The Week Tuesday was a night of upsets, shoo-ins, nailbiters, and way too many cats. Here’s our scorecard for the 2021 elections. Winner: New York City night owls The 110th mayor of New York City, Eric Adams, called it “almost silly” to suggest he shouldn’t have […]
By Matt Taibbi Notes on a “realigning” election. The drama that played out in upscale Loudoun County, Virginia over the last year or so, and cost Democratic candidate Terry McAuliffe the governorship last night, is a book waiting to be written. In fact, if companies like HBO or […]

In Virginia, Democrats are acting like we just had a March on Rome, and Republicans are acting like the Berlin Wall just fell. Youngkin is a moderate Republican “pro-business” type whose only real issue is taxes. He’s light years away from being a right-wing populist or far-right. Youngkin […]
Youngkin ran a very shrewd campaign. He knew exactly what buttons to push. He made opposition to CRT, mask/vaccine mandates, and being pro-“parents rights” and “tough on crime” the centerpiece of his campaign. Meanwhile, the Democrats got caught with their pants down. But Youngkin is just a Mitt […]

The common theme is that the electoral system is losing legitimacy, and both parties are looking for ways to bypass electoral requirements in order […]

Americans continue to self-select into localized lifestyle-based enclaves. In order to function, pan-secessionism would need to assume the form of something like ancient Greece, […]
The party realignment is almost entirely complete at this point. The Democrats are the party of educated elites, and the Republicans are the party of the poor and working-class, with race being an outlier issue. This does not mean that the Republicans are becoming the party of “class […]
