Miriam Adelson, the Megadonor Who Could Transform the Election

Sometime last winter, as violence was raging in Gaza and campuses were erupting in protest, New York features writer Elizabeth Weil suggested we profile Miriam Adelson, the fifth-richest American woman and the richest Israeli, and, like her late husband, Sheldon, a huge funder of both Republican candidates and Israeli causes. While Sheldon’s reputation was well-known, Miriam has flown mostly under the radar, even as she now sits atop a $30 billion fortune. Elizabeth traces both Miriam’s personal history and her money to show her tremendous influence on American politics. In 2020, she and Sheldon were the biggest donors to the Trump campaign, through his super-PAC. So far this year, she has yet to step into the race, though if and when she does, it’s worth asking what she’ll want from the notoriously transactional candidate in return.
