AS much as we were led to believe that the world is in the grip of a ‘woke’ dystopia, which has certainly been the case in a purely socio-cultural context, it is now becoming clear – at least to me – that identity politics was merely used to facilitate the long-term objectives of capitalism.
The last few years have been absolutely crucial for the international ruling class and a measure of its unparalleled success can be seen in the way that its political managers have (a) aroused such contempt for identity politics among the Western peoples that it has led to a huge Right-wing backlash, and (b) systematically nullified the Left by ensuring that its rank-and-file membership has become so obsessed with race and gender issues that it has abandoned the more important struggle against capital.
With the enormous cuts in welfare currently taking place in both America and the British Isles, this twofold strategy is now bearing fruit and the powerful banks and corporations have quickly reverted to more extreme forms of dog-eat-eat mercantilism at a time when there is virtually no resistance whatsoever. Without the crucial help and resources they require, hundreds of thousands of vulnerable people – perhaps millions – are now likely to perish or become extremely ill as a result of these ruthless policies.
Whilst, as an Anarchist, I do not like to see mass dependence on the State, it is capitalism itself which is responsible for having devastated our grassroots communities and due to many of the serious physical and psychological health conditions of those who find themselves most in need there is no organic safety net in place. Help and refuge does exist in the form of intentional communities that function outside of the System, and they are organised and widespread, but for most people these merciless changes leave them with very little time to react.
Whilst it is utterly pointless to line up with the statists and call for governmental reforms, it is essential for us to do everything we can to help those around us who are experiencing problems. Wherever communities do not exist, they must be created from scratch.
