The late 20th century saw the rise of a new economic theory which has devastated the middle class and seen an unprecedented upward transfer of wealth to the richest members of our society. Born from the work of Milton Friedman, this theory is known as Neoliberalism, and was popularised by Ronald Reagan in the United States, Margaret Thatcher in the United Kingdom, and Augusto Pinochet in Chile. But, where did this radical movement come from? How did our species – once focused on collective power and the importance of the group – allow oligarchs, mega-corporations, and private interest to take control of the money supply?
