THERE is a lot of talk about North Africans filling the streets and beaches of Ceuta, but despite the very real threat that mass immigration presents to Europe I do not consider Ceuta to be representative of European territory at all. In actual fact, rather than try to make their way north for sex, sofas and satellite television the Moroccan people as a whole should be more concerned that Ceuta is brimming with European colonists who belong on the other side of the Straight of Gibraltar. After all, the country’s defiant history of anti-colonial resistance speaks for itself.
Those on the Far Right are completely hypocritical to suppose that national sovereignty is something that should be reserved for Europeans, just as those on the Far Left are completely hypocritical to suppose that (justifiable) opposition to European colonialism is somehow consistent with turning a blind eye to mass African migration driven by capitalist interests. This dual lack of consistency is precisely why the international ruling class finds it so easy to set people at one another’s throats.
Freedom and self-determination are universal principles, not the preserve of a particular race and that goes for both sides of the divide.
