FBI Seeks Extradition of Cox Heir Accused of Funding Violent Extremist Network

• James “Fergie” Cox Chambers Jr., an heir to the Cox cable fortune, was arrested in Spain on a U.S. indictment alleging he financed a militant communist organization known as the Unity of Fields Collective, which prosecutors say promoted attacks on law enforcement, critical infrastructure and government facilities while expressing support for Hamas and other designated terrorist organizations.
• According to the Fox News report, Chambers allegedly used inherited wealth to bankroll the group’s activities, including travel, training and operational support. Investigators tied the organization to online propaganda encouraging political violence and to demonstrations in which participants allegedly targeted police officers and publicly praised the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel.
• Chambers was taken into custody by Spanish authorities and faces extradition to the United States. The report states the case reflects the FBI’s broader effort to identify and prosecute individuals allegedly financing violent extremist activity in the United States. READ MORE

Graduate Student Arrested in Connection With Campus Bomb Threat Messages

• Ziheng “Tony” Fang, 30, of San Jose, Calif., was arrested on a federal charge of false information and hoaxes after investigators alleged he placed hateful and threatening messages in restrooms at San Jose State University. Fang, a graduate student pursuing a master’s degree in data science, made his initial appearance in federal court July 10.
• According to the criminal complaint, one message discovered Nov. 5, 2025, began with “!WARNING! MASS BOMB NEXT WEEK,” displayed multiple swastikas, and was accompanied by additional threats. Prosecutors said Fang’s fingerprint was found on the message and that investigators linked him to more than 20 hateful or threatening incidents reported on campus between October 2024 and May 2026 through key-card access records and surveillance footage.
• Court documents state the repeated threats prompted campuswide emergency alerts, caused professors to cancel or move classes online, and left some campus buildings nearly empty on the dates attacks were allegedly threatened. READ MORE

Maryland Man Sentenced for Attempting to Join ISIS

• Michael Sam Teekaye Jr., 22, of Hanover, Md., was sentenced on July 8 to 15 years in federal prison, followed by lifetime supervised release, after pleading guilty to attempting to provide material support to ISIS. According to court documents, Teekaye disclosed to an undercover officer his plan to travel to Somalia to join ISIS as a fighter.
• Prosecutors said Teekaye also described a “plan B” to carry out an attack in the United States targeting Jews and people who support Israel. During the investigation, he purchased ammunition and shooting-range time as part of what he called his “training,” attempted to buy a Kalashnikov-style rifle, communicated with a Somali ISIS fighter who helped arrange his travel, and received airline tickets before his planned departure on Oct. 14, 2024.
• After his arrest, investigators found internet searches for Jewish and Israeli individuals and organizations in Howard County, as well as searches such as “how to break into a home” and “how to escape murder.” Prosecutors also said two homemade weapons, including a large knife, were later discovered in Teekaye’s jail cell before sentencing. A local rabbi addressed the court during sentencing, describing the impact of the case on the Jewish community. READ MORE

South Carolina Man Sentenced for Racially Motivated Shooting

• Jonathan Andrew Felkel, 34, was sentenced July 16 to nine years in federal prison after pleading guilty to violating the housing rights of his Black neighbor, identified in court documents as J.M., during a racially motivated shooting outside their Columbia-area neighborhood on July 17, 2025.
• According to the Justice Department, Felkel admitted he fired a gun while driving into the community and shouted, “You better keep running, boy!” at the victim. During the investigation, he told law enforcement he believed Black people were committing crimes in his neighborhood, assumed J.M. was a criminal because of his race, and intended to send the message that the victim should “leave” and “not be around this area.”
• The FBI Columbia Field Office and the Richland County Sheriff’s Department investigated the case. The federal prosecution was brought under the Fair Housing Act, which prohibits violence or intimidation based on race in connection with housing rights. READ MORE

Utah Man Charged After Anti-Muslim Mall Stabbing

• Peter Michael Larsen, 48, of Taylorsville, Utah, was charged with two counts of attempted aggravated murder and one count of prohibited dangerous weapon conduct after authorities alleged he repeatedly stabbed a Muslim employee at Valley Fair Mall in West Valley City on July 13. According to court documents, Larsen targeted the victim because of his religion.
• Prosecutors said Larsen approached the victim at a mall kiosk, asked about his religion, then attacked him with a knife, inflicting more than 15 stab wounds before bystanders intervened, disarmed the suspect and restrained him until police arrived. The victim survived but suffered critical injuries requiring extensive medical treatment.
• According to court documents, Larsen told police he had planned the attack the night before to “make an example” of Muslims and become a catalyst to rid the country of what he described as an “infestation.” He allegedly said he intended to decapitate the victim, throw his head through the mall as a warning, eat his heart “in a dramatic fashion,” and kill as many Muslims at the mall as possible to inspire others. Prosecutors have asked that the case be treated as a hate crime if he is convicted. READ MORE

Nebraska Man Charged After Threats Against Catholic School and Governor’s Family

• Ean Halstead, 32, of Omaha, Neb., was arrested after investigators linked him to an online threat targeting Columbus Catholic Schools and the family of Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen. Authorities initially arrested Halstead on June 29 following a standoff at his apartment and re-arrested him July 17 on felony charges of terroristic threats and destruction of evidence.
• According to the Nebraska State Patrol, the investigation began after Columbus Catholic Schools reported receiving a threatening online message. Local reporting said the message stated, “I’m going to shoot up this school and kill Jim Pillen’s children and a few nuns” for “funsies.” Investigators executed a search warrant at Halstead’s residence and said they recovered evidence linking him to the threat.
• Authorities said Halstead initially refused commands from troopers, barricaded himself inside his apartment for nearly two hours, and was arrested after voluntarily surrendering. READ MORE

Federal Grand Jury Investigates Nonprofit Network Linked to China-Based Donor

• A federal grand jury in the Southern District of New York has issued subpoenas as part of an investigation into Neville Roy Singham, an American businessman living in Shanghai, and his nonprofit network. According to the report, the investigation is examining potential violations of federal tax laws and the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA).
• The report states the investigation was authorized by Acting Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche and launched by U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton. It also cites CBS News as confirming, through multiple sources, that the grand jury investigation is underway. The article notes that Singham has been widely reported to have funded organizations involved in organizing or supporting pro-Hamas demonstrations that erupted in the United States following the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas terrorist attack on Israel.
• According to the report, investigators are examining organizations including The People’s Forum, which the Center to Advance Security in America alleges coordinated and financially supported protests that crossed into unlawful activity. The article also notes that Sen. Chuck Grassley previously requested a federal investigation into whether the organization should have registered under FARA because of its ties to Singham and China.
