| The news is heavy these days, and it’s not always easy to find bright spots, but this past month isn’t one of those times. Prior to the government shutting down, the FDA gave its approval for the company Evita Solutions to manufacture a generic version of mifepristone, aka the abortion pill. The company says on its website that it “believes that all people should have access to safe, affordable, high-quality, effective, and compassionate abortion care. We know that you can make the best choice for your body.” YES, Evita!
Abortion proponents celebrated the news, while anti-abortion leaders lost it. After all, it was HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. who one week earlier had ordered the FDA to review the efficacy of mifepristone after a bogus paper claimed it was more harmful than previously understood. (It’s not.) But we will take our victories wherever we can find them, even while acknowledging the concerning inquiries into whether the EPA might be able to test wastewater for traces of mifepristone. The attacks won’t stop. But, as ever, science is on the side of (abortion) justice.
What else? New Jersey and Virginia have big elections coming up in less than two weeks, and no surprise that abortion is on the ballot in both states. Tell all your friends in the Garden State and Old Dominion to vote like their rights depend on it. Because, well, they do!
