Should California become its own country? Proposed initiative now collecting signatures

California Secretary of State Dr. Shirley Weber has announced that a new initiative has been cleared to begin collecting petition signatures.

The proposed initiative, started by Marcus Evans, from Fresno, asks whether California should become an independent country.

If it gathers enough signatures, the measure on the November ballet will read: “Should California leave the United States and become a free and independent country?”

If at least 50 percent of registered voters participate in that election, and at least 55 percent vote “yes”, it would constitute “a vote of no confidence in the United States of America” and “expression of the will of the people of California” to become an independent country.

It would not change California’s current government or relationship with the United States.

Supporters must gather 546,651 signatures (five percent of the total votes cast for Governor in the November 2022 general election) in order for the measure to become eligible for the ballot.

Evans has 180 days to collect the signatures for the measure, meaning the signatures must be submitted to county elections officials no later than July 22, 2025.
