A Look Back at the Story of New York

A Look Back at the Story of New York

For over 10 years, every April, we’ve marked our birthday with our “Yesteryear” issue. Each edition looks back at the story of New York City through a thematic lens; our 56th Anniversary issue recounts the history of over 50 restaurants that made the city over the decades and the people that made them iconic.

For some more nostalgia, we’re revisiting “Yesteryear” issues of the past. Keep reading for our explorations of, dressing up, going to work, the “It” girl through the decades, and more.

2023: A Century of the New York “It” Girl

An investigation into a very New York phenomenon, the “It” girl: who anointed them, what it was like to be them, and where they are now.

2022: “A Village in the East Village: Tales From Little Ukraine.”

After Russian troops began advancing toward Kyiv, we redirected our issue toward the growth and resilience of the Ukrainian community on East 7th, which endured long after most such enclaves had assimilated and dispersed.

2021: “Remember the Office?”

As many of us started making our way back to work in person, we looked at 150 years of cubicles, corner offices, all-nighters, and holiday-party hookups in the photocopier room.

2016: “What We Wore.”

In a city where we’re all on display all the time, we’ve spoken to each other through clothes for centuries.

2014: “100 Years, 100 Songs, 100 Nights.”

A look back at 100 years of New York pop music.
