Kid’s brilliant homework response outwits teacher’s sexist question
| Sexism is prevalent and widespread only because we’re all conditioned from an early to accept existing sexist practices and gender roles. One eight-year-old looked past an obvious answer, to expose the inherent sexism in a question designed to elicit a sexist answer from kids. The English teacher didn’t really think much as she created a list of clues for words that contain the letters “UR” in them. The teacher assumed that associating familiar jobs and days of the week among other things to the words would make it easier for the kids. One of the clues read, Hospital Lady. The first instinctive answer that comes up in our mind is the word “nurse” but then you realize that sexism is so deep-rooted that you associate a type of work with a gender, which is basically the definition of sexism. |
| While many students answered with the word ‘nurse’, Yasmine, who hails from Birmingham, England, thought outside the box and wrote surgeon. It was the girl’s father, Robert Sutcliffe, who took to Twitter and pointed out the sexist question, reported Good. To make matters worse, and confirming the question was sexist, the teacher added the words “or nurse” beside the “surgeon” that Yasmine had answered. This makes it pretty obvious that the English elementary school teacher was indeed looking for the answer “nurse,” and even felt compelled to point it out as the obvious choice when Yasmine had indeed provided an answer that ticked the criteria of the ‘surgeon’ being a “hospital lady” and the word did contain the letters “UR.” |
| One of the main reasons Yasmine chose to answer “surgeon” was because her own mother is a surgeon. Her father is also a surgeon. It is a basic example of a kid knowing a woman being a surgeon is possible because she has seen it herself. As the saying goes, “if she can’t see it, she can’t be it.” When you reinforce stereotypical gender norms, kids growing up believing a woman can become a nurse and not a surgeon. In Yasmine’s case, she could see it, and thus knew it was possible. It is also why representation matters when it comes to movies and TV because children consume media content and it shapes their ideas in a big way. |

80-year-old tries on a stunning wedding dress to wed her 60-year-old fiancé: ‘Take a chance’
| Getting married at an old age might not seem ideal for many. However, love has no age and people can decide to marry their soulmate at any stage of their lives. Janet Merryman found love at 80 and decided to get married to her 60-year-old fiancé. Moreover, she did not leave anything out when it came to having her dream wedding. A TikTok video of her trying out a wedding gown went viral recently. In the clip, she looks absolutely stunning as she twirls in a beautiful lace dress. |
| The video was posted on the platform by her granddaughter, Danielle Jefferson, who goes by @theonlydanij on TikTok. The text overlay reads, “My 80-year-old grandma is marrying her 60-year-old fiance.” In the video, Merryman excitedly shows Jefferson her gown. Her granddaughter replies, “You look great. Turn around 360.” It is a strapless white lace dress with a high slit and she looks like a million bucks in it. |
| The granddaughter then asks her to walk and show off the gown. The store staff then tells the grandma: “Close your eyes and put yourself in the venue, thinking of your future with your fiance. If you both have positive thoughts, then bells are here to celebrate with you.” Merryman opens her eyes and rings the bell. Everyone around her starts cheering for her in the clip. |

Woman finds a sweater with a sentimental and heartwarming tag while shopping at a thrift store
| Thrifting is a wonderfully sustainable habit that everyone should inculcate in their lives. Moreover, there’s more to it than what meets the eye. When you donate clothes to a thrift store, not only are you saving the future by being sustainable but also sharing a part of yourself with the world and the same goes when you buy something. Izabela—who goes by @grandmasnosejob on TikTok—shared how thrifting can somehow give you an insight into the beautiful lives of other people that you could never know about otherwise. |
| In a wonderful video, the camera shows the viewers a beautiful jute-like knitted sweater that seems to be hanging on the rack at the thrift store. The caption of this video reads, “Made by Grandma? With Love?” with lots of crying emojis. Priced at $10.49, this sweater seems priceless, all thanks to its tag. The tag reads, “Made by grandma. With love.” Izabela came to the thrift store and came across this sweater which seems to be made by a grandma somewhere for their grandchild, which is the sweetest thing ever. |
| Even the people in the comment section agreed, all while sharing their own stories of grandmothers making things for them to show love. @lesbijstwo commented, “I am an optimist. The grandma is the one who drops items at the thrift store, just so people can wear her sweaters made with love.” @ahgdia.td said, “I once found a scarf with the tag still on it saying something like: ‘I hope this keeps you warm when hiking-grandma.'” |
