The Call Center Where George Santos Learned to Con

“You are the product. You feeling something. That’s what sells.” That’s how Don Draper explained advertising, but it also applies to something else he knew just as well: How to con. Only when you gain a mark’s confidence will they turn over their money. No legitimate profession practices this kind of con more often than telemarketers, like the ones who upsold cable subscribers a decade ago in Queens. One of them, a supposedly rich Brazilian making $12 an hour, didn’t quite fit in — until his co-workers heard how good George Santos was on the phone. It’s just one of the bizarre chapters in his life that author Mark Chiusano has found out about since he started reporting on Santos four years ago. Why was a guy staying in Florida running for Congress in New York? “That was the first weirdness with him, and it kind of caught my attention,” Mark told me. A lot more weirdness followed, and he’s collected it in a new biography of Santos – enjoy this excerpt as an exclusive sneak peek.
