Unsex me here

Dear Reader,

Look, no one with a life can pay that much attention to a war on the other side of the world. And that is how they get you. You’re stuck listening to politicians on TV and getting the establishment line, or reading TAC and finding our analysis—we hope—a helpful counter narrative. But someone should be paying very close attention to the war in Ukraine, especially to U.S. aid there, so that someday there can be a full accounting. As R. Jordan Prescott argued Wednesday, President Joe Biden is wrong, the United States does need a special inspector general for Ukraine.

Divorce used to be something self-respecting adults were a little embarrassed about; even if they weren’t the party at fault, one way or another vows had been broken. No longer. Now there are divorce parties. Managing editor Jude Russo suggests this is of a piece with our general self-esteem culture: “It is not terribly surprising that the children formed by the era of the participation trophy have come to expect that every aspect of their lives, no matter how repulsive, get the cake and balloons treatment.” At a civilizational scale, perhaps it’s more than that.

You have probably noticed that men in America are not so well. Senators like Josh Hawley have said so. I have said so. And, in the past week or so, a bunch of liberal women reporters have said so in places like the Washington Post and Politico. As assistant editor John Hirschauer wrote in his column, their answers to half the population’s problems are less than helpful. “Mainstream American institutions and elected Democrats only speak of masculinity to condemn it or to assess its effects on women and minorities.”

Establish a Special Inspector General for War

We should not repeat the same oversight mistakes that have characterized every war from Bosnia onward.

Where’s my parade?

The right-wing meanies of the ’90s predicted correctly—the self-esteem movement destroyed society.

Progressives don’t let things like facts get in the way of the war on men.

The refusal to take sides on great moral issues is itself a decision. It is a silent acquiescence to evil. The Tragedy of our time is that those who still believe in honesty lack fire and conviction, while those who believe in dishonesty are full of passionate conviction.
