| Do you know anyone who watches Dave? (I say “watch” because I don’t know if watching and liking are mutually inclusive.) If so, send them my way. My friends and colleagues have a hard time with Lil Dicky, a.k.a. Dave Burd, who launched to internet stardom with frat rap songs, gimmicky music videos, and a neurotic, self-centered personality dialed to 11. It’s admittedly a lot to get past. Yet for all its crudeness, his semi-autobiographical comedy series offers insight into the transactional nature of the music industry and its fraught fascination with the “white rapper.” As Shamira Ibrahim illustrates in her close read of Dave, it’s intriguing to see Lil Dicky navigate the white-rapper pitfalls that have plagued Post Malone, Jack Harlow, and Macklemore in real life … once you get past all the dick jokes. |
