| A major story line in this election cycle has been the purportedly yawning political divide between young men and young women. But one analysis that came out this summer from the conservative American Enterprise Institute found that it’s divorced men in particular who support Donald Trump more than any other gender or marriage cohort. So we asked Emily Shugerman to take the plunge into support groups and speak with divorcés about what it is exactly that pulls them toward the MAGA candidate. Their answers were extremely revealing. It’s not like Trump offers policy proposals to reform the aspects of family court that they take issue with, as Emily points out. What he does offer, according to these men, is a worldview that validates their self-mythology as provider-husbands — and reinforces their conviction that women’s empowerment is all well and good until, and unless, it affects them negatively. |
