J.B. Pritzker Is a New Democratic Power Broke

If The Bear’s second season wasn’t reason enough to pay attention to Chicago this summer, then the Oliver Platt–look-alike governor of Illinois is. In his office high above downtown, J.B. Pritzker showed New York’s Gabriel Debenedetti why he has become the Democratic Party’s latest power broker. He was already popular among a slice of the left for a certain ruthlessness in notching liberal victories. But he’s also filthy rich and willing to spend his Hyatt Hotels fortune to help the Dems. Now, he’s thrown hundreds of millions into politics and will host the Democratic convention in Chicago at no cost to the party. That sort of influence has made Joe Biden come to rely on him and, perhaps, set him up as a possible successor.
