Remember when conservative commentators were trying to convince every mainstream media panel that would have them that Gen Z was supposed to be the most “conservative” generation among us?
Well, it doesn’t look like that’s panning out so well.
According to The Political Insider, a new survey shows that over 50% of Gen Z supports censorship over freedom of speech. The data shows how they compare to other age groups:
- Over 40% of those aged 26 – 30 years old agree
- Over 30% of those aged 31 – 50 years old agree
- Over 20% of those aged 51 – 60 years old agree
- Over 10% of those over the age of 61 agree
What could have led to this generational disaster? Potentially multiple factors to consider.
First, we have to acknowledge they’re growing up in a digitally connected world, Gen Z has witnessed the power of social media and the internet in shaping public opinion. This generation has seen how the internet can change our language, interests, and how we can be manipulated to react to things or hold certain beliefs in real life, leading to real-world consequences. In response to the intentional manipulation by politicians and woke corporations, some Gen Z individuals may advocate for limitations on free speech to mitigate what they genuinely consider to be potential harm caused by these online platforms.

Speaking of Gen Z being the foot soldiers of the woke agenda, they have been crafted by public schools, Hollywood, and the mainstream media to be at the forefront of social justice movements, fighting for everything from BLM to the #MeToo movement and even the domestic terrorist group Antifa. Let’s not forget how many young people in Gen Z now identify as part of the LGBTQ+ alphabet mafia. As a result, some may argue that certain forms of speech, particularly the ambiguous “hate” speech or offensive language, should be restricted to ensure the well-being of targeted communities who hold a higher standing in the pyramid of leftist victimhood.
Additionally, Gen Z has grown up in an era of heightened political polarization, raised in front of TV screens in which they’re being told that everyone not like the people on the TV are “literally Hitler.” The increasingly divisive political climate may lead some individuals to question whether unrestricted free speech contributes to meaningful dialogue or simply amplifies hatred and extremism, or whatever the rage flavor of the day is.
Many young people still value the principles of free speech and recognize its importance in promoting a democratic society. It is crucial to engage in open conversations and debates to understand the nuanced perspectives within this generation. Maybe they’ll get over it and see the truth one day, but for now, things aren’t looking too great.
