The Commission for Presidential Debates is a huge, huge reason why third parties can’t get off the ground. They are the gatekeepers of the free exposure that a debate provides, and they control the rules surrounding who qualifies and who doesn’t, many of which are symbiotic with things like state-level barriers to ballot access. The exclusion allows them to control the Overton window between the two of them.
