  1. People need to be reminded that Puerto Rico, Guam, the Virgin Islands, and the Phillipines were seized from Spain in the aftermath of the Spanish-American war, that most foolish war which was started (really!) due to a coal-bunker fire in a battleship called “The Maine” (Remember: “Remember the Maine!”, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Maine_(1889) ), which was initially and for decades falsely claimed to be sunk by a mine in Havana harbor.

See, for example, William Randolph Hearst https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Randolph_Hearst (in fiction, “Citizen Kane” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citizen_Kane ) who almost single-handedly got America into that war.

So what’s really interesting is that NOW, it would be quite convenient for the Democrats to take advantage, 122 years later, of this seizure to add a couple of likely solid-blue states.

  2. Many in the Dems favor this under ideal circumstances but don’t think there is much enthusiasm outside the beltway to add new states to The Union.

  3. Another example of hypocrisy is that generally, the objection to the Electoral College is that it gives small-population states outsized representation. For example, Wyoming has a population of 582,000 in 2020. https://www.google.com/search?q=wyoming+population+2020&rlz=1C1CHBF_enUS827US827&oq=wyoming+population&aqs=chrome.1.69i57j0i433j0l7j0i457.7828j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8
    Yet, D.C has a population of 713,000. http://www.populationu.com/us/washington-dc-population

In one sense, I think that Wyoming, being a huge state with corresponding natural resources, arguably deserves an influence at least in part, based on its physical size. So what about D.C.? I think of it as being populated with human parasites, most notably Federal Government employees. If anything, I’ve long believed that government employees (in general: Feds, State, and Local) probably shouldn’t be allowed to vote at all. They have a conflict of interest with the rest of the population.

Most of those actually live in Northern Virginia, which is why VA is now a blue state.
