The issue I take with academic analyses of political movements is that they build grand theories on over-analysis and over-abstraction, which is the main reason I gave up on the intellectual world. Which is the superior methodology, tracing something's intellectual origins and uncovering parallels throughout each mutation, or simply seeing it in practice through the lense of sociology and social psychology? For instance, it's commonplace to posit the French Revolution as the begginnings of modern Leftism and trace an evolutionary chain between the two.....but this omits the fact that the Jacobins and modern lefties are operating in different times and places, under different material circumstances, with an entirely different set of cultural reference points. In other words, the particulars of both (which define individuals psychologically and therefore the movements in which they participate) overwhelm any abstract theoretical parallels that may exist between them. For example, the average OTSer or Anti-fa type has likely neve heard of Rousseau, has no ancien regime to combat (nor has ever considered the possibility), and probably concieves of their proclivities within the context of recent American history, seeing continuity with no connection to 17th century Europe etc.

The meanings of words change over time. In economics, the meaning of "capital" is entirely different from historical and parallel usage. In economics, capital, capital goods, or real capital refers to already-produced durable goods that are used in production of goods or services. It has nothing to do with rulership, and allows capitalism to be entirely consistent with laissez-faire economics. Its current meaning has only been contaminated by the anti-property Marxist school - which is inevitably pro-state.

For another example, look at the word "danger:"

mid-13c., "power of a lord or master, jurisdiction," from Anglo-Fr. daunger, O.Fr. dangier "power, power to harm, mastery, authority, control" (12c., Mod.Fr. danger), alteration (due to assoc. with damnum) of dongier, from V.L. *dominarium "power of a lord," from L. dominus "lord, master" (see domain). Modern sense of "risk, peril" (from being in the control of someone or something else) evolved first in French and was in English late 14c. Replaced O.E. pleoh; in early M.E. this sense is found in peril.

In the latter case, the corrupted meaning has become official. Popular usage has severed all connection with the original word.

May I also point out that "socialized welfare" - to the extent that it requires the taxation of theft - is inconsistent with liberty.
